Review: Tronik Youth - Youth Is Wasted On The Young
Boy has Neil Parnell been busy, with his partner in crime Ian Considine, Nein Records have been continuously hitting us with a barrage of excellent music throughout the year from a wide variety of new and established talent including (in no particular order) Daniele Baldelli, DJ Rocca, Andrew Weatherall, Sean Johnston, Two Mamarrachos, Antoni Miaovvi, Gemini Brothers, Man Power, Jonah Considine, Lokier, Heretic, Cannibal Ink, Dark Strands, Amevicious and William Earl. But now it’s the Boss man’s turn!
Neil recorded ‘Youth Is Wasted On The Young’ over a year at his home studio, fusing fat analogue and plug in based sounds and has created an album I think gives us a real window into Neil’s soul and musical heritage (check out Ran$om Notes great influences piece on Neil). But I don’t want to sound clichéd in my musings so onto the tracks.
We start with a late night race through the streets of an unknown city `On Death Highway` before moving into melodic religious wails over pulsing rhythms in `Splinter of the Minds eye`.
`Losing my Mind` nods to Neil’s Post Punk and New wave influences which *coughs even feels a little Kraftwerkesque. `Hate Tease` feels like a cinematic monster produced for a Tron like fight sequence or an epic hunt scene (you’ll get the vibe when you hear it).
A pulsing trip awaits you in `Dark Passenger` before the synth heavy monster that is `Memor-Hex` cleanses your ears before making way for the eighties inspired `Malice of Absence`.
The crazy preaching classic that is `The Healer` jumps all over you making way for the truly epic and my personal favourite `Descent of Man` which hits you with its dark brooding tones and maniacal messages, it heightens the mood perfectly before `Good Nacht` and `The Unknowable Question` both bring you back down with their calming and meditative qualities which close out the album perfectly.
It’s been a while coming but `Youth is Wasted` really is a top album which as I’ve said really does pull together all of Neil’s influences and musical knowledge in one place while confirming the quality that we’ve become accustomed to with Nein Records.
