Review - Krankbrother - Electric Lucifer
KRANKBROTHER - ELECTRIC LUCIFER (DFTD)
Playing host to some of London’s most unconventional party’s Danny and Kieran Clancy, have expanded their brand; hosting events and stages at festivals worldwide. In June 2014, the duo release their debut EP, 'Electric Lucifer' on the mighty Defected's sub label DFTD.
The transition from DJs and event organisers to producing seems effortless.
The EP opens with its title track ‘Electric Lucifer’. A mesmeric, bass driven melody, complimented by vocals which capture the rise in popularity of underground house music.
The second single on the EP, entitled ‘Big Mo’, kicks back into the past with a retro 80’s vibe. A funky bassline and swinging synth sounds lead straight into a hook fit for an old school US detective show (‘tasche and all). With very slight tints of darkness, ‘Big Mo’ pulls through an edginess in its tones which encapsulates one’s feelings when making the transition through dusk; an experience now synonymous to a Krankbrother all day and all night party.
Closing track and personal favourite ‘Thank You Baby’ transports the mind straight to the world renowned Balearic Island with its free flowing rhythms. The jazzy organ, saxophone loop and Motown vintage vocals work perfectly in tandem with the heavy kick to bring you what could be one of their tracks of the summer.
If you are one of the few underground music aficionados who have yet to experience a Krankbrother event in person, this EP gives you the perfect insight as to what you can expect. A sound a lot more glamorous than some of the venue’s used in their early days. What the party’s may have previously lacked in prestige, they have always more than made up for with character. This EP is no different, all in all a very solid release.
