REVIEW - Craig Smith - Only When It Is Darkest

Craig SmithOnly When It Is Darkest EP (Incl. Phlash / Fabio Della Torre Remix)
The latest offering on Teng records is from the man behind The Six Borough Project, Mr Craig Smith.
Only When It Is Darkest, the first track on the EP, the original mix, is textbook deep house, aural silk, expertly and beautifully layered, velvet deepness, peppered with hi-hat heaven, it successfully takes you on a real journey, one I personally did not want to end. The Phlash Remix takes things in a more direct route, starting out with a sharp punchy percussive, vocal snippets and synth heavy groove, this has a more disco/latin feel.
Next is the Fabio Della Torre Pleasure Mix which takes things back to a more gentle vibe with a simpler opening drum pattern, the main synth loop slowly and gently creeping in carries the track progressively forward.
The final track on the EP is Matter Dont Matter, a low slung groover reminiscent of Craig’s earlier outstanding work with The 6th Borough Project. A real builder kicking off with a fat bassline and some really pretty synth hooks makes for a slo-mo house, heads down dance floor destroyer.
8/10
