Review: Yantar - Somerville and Wilson - Hell Yeah Recordings

We’ve long been fans of our antipodean brothers Somerville and Wilson here at Numb towers and when we were sent their eagerly anticipated long player ‘Yantar’ we were over the moon.

Released on Hell Yeah Recordings on the 10th February the album is a long distance relationship between the Italian label and the boys. With numerous remixes and EP’s in their discography the seven tracker (+a bonus track) is unbelievably the duo’s debut LP. 

The Album title track ‘Yantar’ opens proceedings with soothing blissed out synths and floating keys that will undoubtedly soundtrack many a sunset throughout the summer, whether it be beach, bar or field.

‘Melt’ follows a similar vibe as its predecessor but raises the tempo a notch or two with deep twisted flecks of gurgling acid married with some wonderful percussion.
‘Lantern Dusts’ is a far deeper dubbed out affair which floats between subtle sax and complimenting keys and highlights the diversity of the album wonderfully while ‘Field of Poplar’ is another dreamy tropical affair that I’d put right up there Mark Barrott.

Now don’t fret people…the dance floor is catered for amiably with a trio of deep driven cosmic acid house in the form of ‘Cero Gravity’, ‘Loyale Royale’ and ‘Cenobite’.

‘Xor & Or’ closes out the LP but I’ll let you check that out for yourself (its probably my favourite track, but only just).

So in summary  (I nearly put Somery)

If you were expecting a plethora of chuggy bangers that you’d associate with Craig and Richards DJ sets then you’ll be disappointed (bear with me).  But if you are after an incredible body of music that you’ll listen to time and time again then jump in and soak it up.

I really can’t get enough of this album, honestly. Sumptuous slowed down sounds for serious grown-ups is a good way to describe this album. I prefer fucking ace !!
