Within 6 minutes of it being on I was already finding Our Kind Of Traitor to be intriguing…to be fair I always find anything with Ewan McGregor in to be like this but that’s because i’m always comparing anything he does to Renton from Trainspotting for some reason.
But with a good set up paired up with the fact that my wife wasn’t already mithering about “who’s he? What’s he doing? Why is he doing that?”, I was firmly set to enjoy this flick in my post IKEA visiting state.
Perry (Macgregor) & his wife Gail (Naomie Harris) are on holiday where they befriend a suave Russian called Dima (Stellan Skarsgard as a big time money launderer for the Russian mafia) who takes Perry to a party that features beer, bugle, a big swimming pool & Apache blasting out of the sound system…imagine the Playboy Mansion and the best bits of Barrymore’s gatherings and you’re probably nearly there. Perry & Dima get close & become buddies then before you can say ‘molotov cocktail’ Perry is lured into help his new friend escape the country & turn evidence against the mobsters…MI6 get involved and from then on he’s in the centre of a shit storm salad! From the set up I thought we would be getting a Jason Bourne type outing and at times it did dip its toe into some fast paced scenarios but to be honest it wasn’t exactly turtle head kind of tense and was often very predictable. But all the same it was an enjoyable romp that never outstayed its welcome or became dull…the ending sort of petered out rather than leave you breathless and saying “wow!” over & over again…maybe my expectations were higher than they should have been. Was I bored? No…was I entertained? Yes… Worth a watch for sure even if its to see our very own Damian Lewis continue to look like he is always sucking on about 4 mint imperials all at once. |
