Review: MANNELLA - "YOLIN" EP - TUNNYL RECORDS
The ever dependable and consistent TUNNYL Records hit their sixth release by welcoming Milanese Mannella to the family.
Owner of the "PicNic34" and "JTSeries" record labels he has been working with artists such as Blawan, Vladislav Delay, Cristian Vogel,Lucretio & Marieu aka The Analogue Cops and many more. His history began in the '90s, when a little guy based in Milan used his pocket money to buy vinyl and lose himself in the music. This wax addiction quickly progressed into mastering the art of mixing. In 2001 he began to play in all the most popular clubs around Italy. Moving to Berlin in 2014, Mannella caught the attention of big names such as Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock and DVS1. Recently he has made massive strides into the scene playing at the historic Tresor cage and many other notable clubs around the city.
With a busy tour schedule lined up for 2016 and plenty more gems in his arsenal that he plans to release he is without a doubt someone to keep your eyes and more importantly your ears locked onto. |
So onto the music .......
The title track “Yolin” has a crisp but subtle gritty undertone with a deep throbbing bass line interspersed with cosmic stabs which are complimented by lashings of wonky synth action before all joining hands in a wonderfully heady mix of madness.
“Triangular” had me bouncing from the off, Mannella retains the gritty flavour in his bass line and bombards your ears with other worldly sounds which invoke a trippy feel to the track.
“Vireg” starts out innocently enough but very quickly the covers are removed to reveal a lethal blend of phased keys and cleverly crafted drums that weave around each other perfectly
Lastly but by no means least “Viggus” feels a little lighter initially with a smoother bass line until all the elements are in place, Mannella allows you to pause for thought briefly and catch your breath before bringing everything back together and leaving you gasping for breath.
8/10
Strap yourself in for this one when it lands as this is a ride that demands a safety harness. An excellent addition to the Tunnyl family.
