Review: Duncan Gray - Proper Bogan
Review: Duncan Gray – Proper Bogan
With two great remixes featuring on their recent Pals Vol 3 compilation, Playpal called Tici Taci Boss man Duncan Gray back to drop his first Ep for the label. The EP consists of two of Duncan’s tracks Proper Bogan and The Twelfth Day which get remix treatment from Playpal boss Teniente, Kezokichi, Lee `Peza` Perry, Amevicious and Id!r.
Proper Bogan
The original mix of Proper Bogan is a thumping funked up excursion which has the Gray trademark chug stamped all over it, pulsing keys and an infectious hook drive you through a 9 minute feast which you don’t want to stop. The remixes on Bogan firstly come from Kezokichi & Teniente Castillo who take the track into a deeper and darker place. Strong keys abound and ride nicely over the dirty dubbed out bassline. Peza takes an alternative route with his pumped up remix and out of the whole EP I have to say this is my fave, a tantalising build makes you sit up and beg before slapping you firmly with a neck snappingly good composition which has so many layers it begs to played over and over again, truly infectious stuff.
Twelfth Day
Twelfth Day is the calmer Ying to Proper Bogan’s Yang and given the variety of the remixes across the EP this isn’t a bad thing at all, the instantly recognisable Gray guitar riff sets the pace and is accompanied by sweet cosmic synth sounds. Marseille man Amevicious brings a harder edge to his remix while preserving the vibe of the original. Crisp percussion dances between Duncan’s delayed guitars in this quality remix of the original. Id!r closes out the EP with his interpretation of Twelfth Day, I don’t know how he does it but the space (arpeggiation doesn’t really do it justice) throughout the piece is ridiculous and sounds frankly amazing.
