Really chuffed that for our next instalment of the Numb Mixtape we have DJ, Producer, Sprechen Music label boss, all round top bloke and chief prosecutor for crimes against footwear Mr Chris Massey
You'll be able to catch Chris playing at the Cowbell All Dayer on the 11th June at Islington Mill and the Electric Elephant at Tisno in July.
Chris kindly spent some time answering a few questions for us which will give you an insight into his past, present , future and potato based snack preferences.
Sit back press play and step into the world of Mr Chris Massey ..... Enjoy x NUMB) I like to think our readers have a degree of musical knowledge but to the uneducated who are you and what do you do?
CM) My name is Chris Massey and I’m a north west based musical person who makes music, remixes music, releases music, releases other people’s music & also plays music…I suppose it’d be considered a job but its sometimes referred to as “blagging a living” :) I have my own record label called Sprechen and I also look after A&R for the Manchester based Paper Recordings & Paper Disco labels as well as working at Electriks (home of the Unabombers/Electric Chair & formerly Electric Elephant) where I deal with any events/marketing/promotions etc.…and yes, it is hard finding time for everything! NUMB) Stock mixtape question for the geeks, where did you record it & what did you use? CM) The mix was recorded in my home studio on 1 CDJ 1000 MK3 (which is covered in stickers from my first trip to Ibiza years ago), 1 CDJ 1000MK2 (which isn’t mine) and my trusty Allen & Heath Xone 62 mixer (which badly needs servicing) and was recorded into Logic….in fact, this mix will hold the title of being the last ever mix recorded at my current abode as we move into Manchester at the start of April! NUMB) Your label Sprechen is making a lot of noise and you’ve had two great releases with Damon Jee’s `Summer No Summer` and your Pink Flamingo EP what’s in the pipeline for 2016? CM) Many thanks for saying we’re making a lot of noise, I just hope it’ll make enough to cover the costs! Ha ha! No, seriously it’s been a great start with a wicked response and it’s really great to see support from many peers such as Doc Martin, Ewan Pearson, Justin Robertson, Ivan Smagghe etc. all people whom I have personally been a fan of for many years. For 2016 we have a few EP’s already scheduled that I’m really excited about, in particular from The Gameboyz who I believe have something really unique in their style & sound, especially in what they have cooked up for us at Sprechen! That will come with remixes by Fabrizio Mammarella & Neon Amish who themselves have an EP due to drop later in the year too. I’m trying to keep the releases as varied as possible but not too different so as to confuse people….releases will always be aimed more for the dancefloor which I believe allows a wider range of vibes, for instance he next EP comes from DJ Steevo and is a straight up, no messing filtered disco which is a contrast in sound to what we have put out previously yet it would still work alongside those releases if you played them in the same set…that’s my thought process anyhow! NUMB) You’ve played at some legendary parties all over the place from Festival Number 6 & Sankeys to The Electric Elephant Festival in Croatia. If you had to pick what’s the gig that holds the fondest memory? CM) Barbarellas at Electric Elephant will always rank up top…I’m sure anyone who has played at there will testify it truly is one of the best places to play it. To be able to play to such an amazing & friendly crowd who are with you every step of the way is such an amazing experience. Closing the festival with Sean Johnston & Justin Robertson at Barbs in 2014 (which for me personally was the best year at Electric Elephant) was just incredible…even now people still comment to me on that night! Back on home turf, it goes without saying that every time I have played at Homoelectric it proves to be my most fave place to play! If an event is described as being: “A non-stop exotic disco for twisted sleazy people. Sexual orientation and music genres are irrelevant on our dancefloors” then its clear you’re playing for people totally on your wave length…warming up for & closing after Justin Robertson here was pretty special, Jamie Bull (head promoter) briefed me by saying “just go hell for leather right from the word go!”, perfect music remit! Also would defo have to mention Re:late in Stoke which is ran by Joey T & Ocean Spencer (son of Kelvin Andrews & daughter of Danny Spencer aka Soul Mekanik)…the atmosphere they have been able to capture in a sweaty little basement tucked away in a Northern textile town was just insane! Literally came out of that place with my ears ringing, head vibrating, about 2 stone lighter and knowing everyone on the dancefloor, it was pure hedonism! NUMB) You’re now part of the Electronic Soul Agency which is based in Germany does that mean we’re going to see Chris Massey playing more on the continent? CM) I sincerely hope so! Let’s see what this year holds instore ;) NUMB) I know you’re an oracle on savoury snacks but hypothetically you’re only allowed to have one type of potato based snack for the rest of your days. Which would it be? CM) That’s a tough one because my tastes change from week to week or month to month…I’m currently enjoying a corn snacks renaissance with cheese & onion Transform-A-Snacks and flaming hot Cheetos Twists top of the leader board, however I know for a fact this will change when we hit Summer! |
