Review: The Great Italo Johnson Swindle
The Great Italo Johnson Swindle
Friday the 14th of March 2014, Corsica Studios, Elephant & Castle, London, UK:
The promoters of the ever successful Tief nights at Corsica Studios have started a monthly offshoot party; Distant Cousins, with a very simple concept; let the music/artist talk for themselves.
Taking inspiration from extended artist club sets in clubs like Berghain/Panorama Bar and Robert Johnson just the main room at Corsica intimately plays host to a single act, warmed up by resident DJ and head honcho Hessletime, the monthly artist/s booked then plays an extended six hour set, giving the limited headcount of punters a real audiophile picture of the artist/s involved and what their musical value and style really means. A night for the beard strokers and real electronica enthusiasts.
Italojohnson; a completely anonymous trio of DJ’s supposedly based in Berlin, they are shrouded in mystery. With virtually no press interviews or recorded events apart from their killer Boiler Room set, rare DJ appearances, and the string of EP releases dating back to 2010 not a great deal is known about them. Apart from their incredibly rare ability to create completely new, fresh and apparently timeless sounding house music tracks.
Extremely sadly the venue tonight is almost empty. For the few of us that are in attendance, we are treated to one of the most forward thinking, freshest and innovative six hours of pure heads down, four to the floor house that you could ever imagine. Being a rather selfish person I was happy to have the mysterious trio all to myself, but at the same time completely disappointed that the guys missed out on a full house, it could have been electric!
London’s finest sorely missed out!
Heads up for the next Distant Cousins event featuring a Workshop Records showcase with
MM/KM (Mix Mup & Kassem Mosse) & Even Tuell, seriously people don't miss out on this again.
